How to Connect Xero to Claude AI: A Practical Guide for Malaysian Businesses
Ask questions about your accounts in plain language. Here's how to set up the free Xero connector, what it can and can't do, and when you need the Xero MCP server instead.
What if you could ask your accounts a question the way you'd ask your finance manager, and get an answer in seconds? That's what connecting Xero to Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant, does.
Instead of running reports and exporting to Excel, you type questions like "Which customers owe us more than RM10,000?" and Claude answers using your live Xero data.
Two ways to connect: connector vs MCP server
| Xero connector for Claude | Xero MCP server | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Business owners and finance teams asking questions | Developers building custom workflows and automations |
| Setup | A few minutes, no technical skills | Developer setup required |
| Access | Read-only | Can read and write data, depending on setup |
| Cost | Free to add | Depends on your Xero developer plan |
Most businesses should start with the connector.
What you need
- An active Xero subscription
- A Claude account (free or paid)
- Your Xero login, with access to the organisation you want to connect
How to connect Xero to Claude (step by step)
- In Claude, open the connectors directory and find Xero.
- Click to add it, then sign in with your Xero login.
- Choose the organisation you want Claude to access.
- Start asking questions in a new chat.
You connect one organisation at a time. Business owners can switch between their entities, and accountants and bookkeepers can switch between clients.
Questions you can ask
- "Which customers have invoices overdue by more than 60 days, and how much do they owe in total?"
- "Compare our revenue and gross margin this quarter against the same quarter last year."
- "What were our five biggest expense categories last month, and which grew the most?"
- "Who are our top 10 suppliers by spend this year?"
- "Do we have enough cash to cover next month's bills and payroll?"
- "Draft a polite payment reminder for each customer more than 30 days overdue."
What the connector can't do
The connector is read-only. Claude can't create, edit, approve, reconcile or pay anything in your Xero. That's a deliberate safety feature: you get answers, and your books stay under your control.
Is my data safe?
- The connector follows your Xero user permissions. Claude only sees what your Xero login can see.
- According to Xero, connector data isn't combined across organisations or used to train Anthropic's models.
- You can disconnect at any time from Claude or Xero.
Good practice: AI answers are a starting point, not a filing. Always check figures against Xero reports before using them for tax returns, SST submissions, LHDN e-invoices or management decisions.
When you need more: the Xero MCP server
If you want AI to do work in Xero, not just answer questions, that's where the Xero MCP server and the Xero API come in. Examples we've built for Malaysian businesses:
- A withholding tax AI agent that creates WHT bills automatically on payments to non-residents
- A supplier e-form that collects TIN and BRN for e-invoicing and updates Xero contacts directly
- CRM-to-Xero sync, such as our Bitrix24 and Xero integration
These need proper design and testing, because they write to your books.
